Crisis Intervention January Link Round Up
Hi All,
Welcome to this month’s round up! For our new members, I send out this email once a month with links to articles relevant to our volunteer work. Please feel free to share this email with friends you think might be interested and comment on any of the articles.
Just a friendly reminder that DOVE Training starts this Saturday! Please let Dana, Ari, or myself know if you have any last minute questions or concerns.
Now onto this month’s links:
Kobe Bryant’s death has brought his sexual assault case back to the public consciousness with a Washington Post reporter being temporarily suspended for tweeting out this link to a Daily Beast story. This particular article does a great job of detailing the 2003 alleged assault which I think is helpful as I know many of us were quite young during the case (Note: this article does have graphic details)
Kobe eventually issued an apology to his accuser in which he admitted he could understand why she viewed their sexual encounter as nonconsensual. The Nation explored the rarity and implications of this sort of apology.
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is being stalled from being renewed in the Senate. Many Senators are working to close the “boyfriend loophole” which allows an abusive partner to possess a firearm if they are not legally married to, living with, or have a child with their partner; however, some Republican Senators are pushing back against this restriction.
The Atlantic published an article that serves as a brief primer on the history of sexual assault prosecution in America in light of Harvey Weinstein’s trial.
Promising Young Woman, a film starring Carey Mulligan that focuses on vengeance related to sexual assault, has premiered at Sundance to rave reviews. It opens in theaters April 17.
